This new body of ceramics is inspired by Kore, the mythological goddess of spring’s growth and bounty, who symbolized the vegetation that shoots forth in spring. Capturing forceful energies, ethereal and earthbound, these works are hand thrown and then hand built, emerging dynamically from a center that has disappeared. Reflecting Kore’s dual nature as chthonian and vegetative, appendages grow upwards and outwards, drawn to the light from darkness. These sculptures offer a new vision of hope, rebirth and renewal.

These vessels are wheel-thrown brown stoneware with hand-built appendages, brushed with slips and glazes in blacks, whites and bronze. Each piece is a unique object signed by the artist.

Peter Speliopoulos (born in Springfield, MA, of Greek descent) This multidisciplinary artist lives and works between Upstate, NY and Patmos, Greece. He received his BFA from the Parsons School of Design in 1982. For over thirty years, Speliopoulos established an international career as a high fashion designer and costume designer for opera and modern ballet. His design and creative direction have inspired the collections of Christian Dior, Cerruti and Donna Karan among others; his costume designs significantly figured in the work of director/choreographers Karole Armitage and Luca Veggetti.

Speliopoulos’ passion for craftsmanship, time-honored techniques, organic textures, and forms has informed his work throughout his creative career. The artist’s collection of unique interpretation of the traditional wheel-thrown forms of Antiquity ceramic pieces results from his long-standing fascination for and experimentation with the medium.
